Kids Wagon Buyer’s Guide

The trusty kids’ wagon will fill most adults with nostalgia. Being hauled around by parents, siblings and friends in those bright red wagons while the sun is shining is a fantastic way for your kids to spend their time. And, once they get too big for the wagon, it can be used to carry all their stuff wherever they need to go!

But there’s a huge array of designs on the market, choosing the best wagon for kids can be tricky. And with new wagons with a range of features popping up left, right and center, you might need a little help.

Follow my speedy buyer’s guide to help make the decision a walk (or ride!) in the park.

What Feature Makes one Product Better than Another?

Brand

Wagons from brands like Radio Flyer will be more expensive as this is a reputable brand and their wagons are in high demand. However, these wagons are normally excellent quality, the customer service is good and they have a range of wagons to suit a variety of needs. Opting for a quality wagon from a reputable brand will ensure your kids safety, as well as saving you money long-term.

Canopy

If you live in an especially sunny state and know the wagon will be mainly used outdoors, an umbrella or canopy is an essential. This will help prevent sunburn and ensure your kids keep cool while playing. Most canopies will be removable.

Seating Area

A padded seating area will keep your kids comfortable and help them think of the wagon as their secret hideout, not just a place for storing their toys! Get a wagon with a couple of seats if you have 2 kids, but remember not to exceed the weight limit.

Cup Holders

Keeping your kids hydrated in the hot sun is easier if you’ve got cup holders and even a cooler. This will encourage them to play for longer as they won’t go hungry or thirsty!

Seat Belts

Parents of younger children may want to consider a seat belt for extra safety. Pulling the wagon at high speeds without a seat belt can be dangerous.

Collapsible

Some wagons are collapsible which will allow you to fold it up and put it away when not in use. Wagons can take up a lot of space so if you’re not going to be using it to store toys, a collapsible model might suit you best.

Storage Space

Many parents opt to use their kids’ wagons as storage for their toys when they are not in use. Wagons with compartments for storage are easy to find and can help keep the house tidy! If you’re out and about, these compartments double up as an area to store snacks or picnic blankets.

Tires

Wagons are generally designed for flat and smooth surfaces, but the tires are an important consideration if you’re planning on using it on different terrains, such as the beach or on grass. Air tires are best for camping trips and beach visits, while bigger rubber tires will be less susceptible to punctures and will give a more stable ride.

What Can you Expect at Different Price Points?

A wagon for much older kids will have a higher weight limit and may cost more. 2-seater wagons or even wagons for 3 or more kids will be more expensive, but may have a weight limit of up to 120kg. Wagons for younger kids, toddlers or toys will be cheaper.

Cheaper wagons will have a basic design and be made from less durable materials. Plastic wagons will be cheaper, while wooden or metal wagons will be more expensive.

FAQs

Who invented the toy wagon?

The first kids’ wagon was invented by Antonio Pasin in 1917. He built wooden wagons, selling them locally before becoming a hit in 1933. The wooden wagons were in such high demand by 1923, that he formed the Liberty Coaster Company, which allowed for a fast production of the wagon. This company was eventually renamed the Radio Flyer, which is now one of the most well known brands of kids’ wagons.

How safe are they?

Pretty safe! Well-built wagons like the ones I have recommended will have sturdy wheels and be stable on smooth terrains. Many wagons will have proper seat backs and seat belts, although this is not often the case. Teaching your kids how to stay safe while using the wagon is important, and make sure there is an adult on hand to supervise if the kids are young. Finally, do not exceed the recommended weight limit from the manufacturer.

Why is red the traditional color?

Red is the traditional color, because red sells the best! Radio Flyer used to make wagons in a range of colors, including blue, green and yellow, but red was always the most popular. Eventually, the red wagon became iconic and they are now a symbol of an American childhood!
