Go-Kart for Kids Buyer’s Guide

A kids’ go-kart is a toy I’m a firm believer every parent should invest in. Not only do go-karts provides hours of fun for your child by helping them get outside into the fresh air (and away from their phone screens!), they can also have a hugely positive impact on your child’s development.

Go-karts for kids can help improve coordination and spatial awareness, develop their driving skills and help them learn about safety. Getting kids outside and active is more important than ever in our technology-obsessed world, and go-karts are a fantastic way to get their legs moving and help develop their strength and endurance.

There’s a range of kids’ go-karts on the market, and knowing which one to go for can be tricky. Not only this, parents often worry about safety, and buying from a non-reputable brand can be risky. Follow this buyer’s guide to help you decide on the best go-kart for your child.

Safety

Of course, safety will be the number 1 concern for many parents buying their kids a pedal go-kart. Buying your go-kart from a reputable brand will ensure safety standards are met, and most are extremely easy for your kids to get the hang of.

To ensure your child’s safety, keep on top of any maintenance issues. While wear and tear is normal, too much may compromise your child’s safety and you may need to replace certain parts. Safety gear is readily available and wearing long sleeves and pants will reduce the risk of cuts and scrapes should your child have an accident.

The best way to keep your child safe on a go-kart, however, is to teach them to stay safe! They should know not to go too fast and to stay away from roads and cars. Don’t let them play in busy areas or near open water, and keep a close eye on them if they are young.

Electric vs Manual vs Gas Powered

Electric go-karts are powered by a small motor on the back. They usually have a top speed of around 12mph making them seriously fun for kids, but they aren’t fast enough to be dangerous. The downside is that electric go-karts have long charging times, they are much heavier and they’re much more expensive. They also provide no exercise for your child, although they do at least get them outside and enjoying themselves!

Pedal-powered or manual go-karts are controlled by the driver. These work just like normal bicycles and are great for getting your kids exercising! They provide some old-school fun and require no charging. These go-karts are also lighter, cheaper, and safer, but they definitely lack the excitement of electric go-karts.

Finally, there’s gas-powered go-karts which aren’t quite so popular. These are very fast and require a lot more experience to stay safe. These are very expensive and can be dangerous in the wrong hands – but they are seriously fun!

Size

Children’s go-karts come in a range of designs and sizes. Some are suited for older kids, while others are for much younger. If you’re worried about your child growing out of their go-kart too soon, opt for a model with an adjustable seat and steering wheel. This allows you to adapt the go-kart as your child grows, meaning you don’t need to upgrade to something larger!

The weight limit on kids’ go-karts can vary, but ensure you stick to it. Most will have a weight limit of around 130lbs. Regularly exceeding this weight limit can compromise your child’s safety as well as damaging the go-kart.

Age Range

Most kids’ go-karts are designed for a wide age range, although they will have max weight as we’ve already seen. Pedal go-karts are generally best for younger kids or beginners, while electric or gas-powered go-karts are better for teenagers. The recommended age range can be taken with a pinch of salt however, as lighter teenagers can still have fun on go-karts designed for kids!

Durability

Save yourself money long-term by investing in a go-kart from a reputable brand. This will ensure it can stand the test of time and keep your child safe. A steel frame is far preferable to plastic, and rubber wheels will be safe and stable on a range of surfaces. Ensure you don’t exceed the max weight limit, store your go-kart in a safe place and keep on top of any maintenance issues.

Weight

Many kids’ go-karts are built to be lightweight, although electric go-karts will be heavier. If you’re going to be picking it up and putting it away then you might want to go for something lightweight.

Speed

Go-karts are perfect for both kids and their parents, as they allow kids to go fast enough to feel the wind on their face and have some serious fun, without putting them in danger of high-speed crashes. Most electric go-karts will reach a top speed of about 10mph, which is exciting for kids but allows you to catch them in an emergency!

FAQs

Is go-karting safe for my child?

Go-karting is generally very safe, provided you buy your child a go-kart that matches their abilities – I wouldn’t recommend leaving your 4-year-old alone with a gas-powered go-kart for example!

Pedal go-karts are very safe as they allow your child to control the speed themselves. These have a handbrake and they’re usually very intuitive to use. However, there’s a few things you can do to make them even safer, such as investing in the right protective gear (see below), as well as following a few simple safety precautions.

Teach your child to be safe before they head out on their go-kart. While a quick zoom around the living room is unlikely to do much damage to either child or kart, the roads are a different matter. Warn your child against going too fast or competing with their friends, and keep an eye on them. They should stay away from busy areas and traffic.

Finally, ensure you buy a go-kart from a reputable brand with a solid braking system and make sure the go-kart is in good condition and working order before they set off.

What protective gear should I get my child?

Tight-fitting clothes will reduce the risk of them getting caught in the wheels or mechanisms which can cause serious injuries. Kids should also have long sleeves and pants to protect their arms and legs if they do fall.

Helmets are highly recommended every time your child is on their go-kart. Even a small bump to the head can cause serious injury, so allowing your child on the go-kart without a helmet is simply not worth the risk.

Finally, your child should wear the right shoes that allow them to pedal easily. Their feet shouldn’t get stuck in the pedals and make sure their laces are always tied! Shoes that are too loose will stop them from peddling freely.

What surfaces should they ride on?

Most kids’ go-karts are designed to be used on smooth surfaces. Pedal go-karts are best for smooth terrains like roads and sidewalks, and while they do perform well on bumpy surfaces they will be harder work for your child! Electric go-karts may have thicker tires that allow them to be used off-road. Generally, the thinner the tires, the less comfortable the ride on bumpy surfaces, while thick tires will allow them to take on rougher terrains.

How to care for my child’s go-kart

Just like a bicycle, your child’s go-kart should be cleaned regularly to increase its lifespan and keep your child safe. Any moving parts should be oiled if they begin to squeak, and your go-kart should be stored in a safe place away from direct sunlight or rain. If you notice any excessive wear and tear on any of the parts (especially the brakes or wheels), contact your manufacturer as you may need to replace some parts.
