FAQ

How to Pan for Gold:

Fancy panning your very own gold? Gather your gold panning set, and head to a cold mountain stream. If this isn’t possible then just a regular stream will do!

Anywhere the water slows down is where the gold is most likely to be, as this is where the heavier rocks and minerals are. Heavy materials may settle on the inside of bends. Dig around this section, digging down into the stream bed.

Fill your pan so it’s 75% full of gravel, then submerge it into the stream so that it is just under the surface. Shake the pan back and forth so that materials are moving, but don’t let them get shaken out of the pan.

Then begin to use a circular motion, rotating the gravel inside the pan. This will cause the dirt and clay to dissolve. Pick out any large rocks which are left and wash clean, repeating until all the large rocks have moved and the much heavier gold and black sand has settled at the bottom of the pan.

You then need to separate the gold from the black sand. Swirl the black sand inside the pan and concentrate the gold at the edge. This takes a little practice. You should then be able to remove the gold with tweezers and put them into your gold vial.

There will still be gold left in the black sand, so add the black sand back to the pan, complete with more paydirt to start panning some more. You can use a magnet to separate the black sand from the gold, and transfer the gold to a storage vial.
