Properly caring for your tent is essential when it comes to prolonging its lifespan – saving you both time and money in the long run. Your home in the outdoors requires care just like your regular home, and knowing how to clean your tent properly will make your next camping experience far more comfortable.

Here’s how to get your tent looking good as new post-camping.

Step 1: Remove Loose Dirt

While the tent is still erected, remove any loose dirt from the exterior. This includes pine needles, leaves or anything else that may have gathered on the fabric overnight.

Empty the tent if there is anything in it and give the inside a quick wipe up if necessary.

Step 2: Clean the Tent with Soap and Water

Using liquid hand soap and lukewarm water is the most effective way to clean your tent without damaging it. Ensure all the zips are closed then gently wash the tent, rinsing it thoroughly and allowing it to dry.

Mold can easily grow if you don’t allow the tent to dry properly – this job is best done in the sunshine!

Be sure not to use washing detergent or washing machines and dryers as these can damage the fabric.

Step 3: Clean the Tent Poles

Take down the tent and use a soft, dry cloth to clean the tent poles. This is especially important if you have been camping near the beach and the poles are gritty with salt. Leaving them gritty or dirty like this will cause the poles to corrode.

Step 4: Store the Tent

Once your tent is fully dry, roll it up loosely and store it in a cool, dry place. Store the tent poles fully assembled if possible, to reduce tension and prolong their life.

Tent Care Tips

Keeping your tent in good condition is more than just keeping it clean. A tent footprint is a great way to prolong its life, preventing friction between the fabric of the tent and the ground. Ensure you don’t wear shoes inside the tent, and it’s also best not to eat inside as this will attract bugs and critters.

While cleaning and caring for your tent may be the last thing you want to do, especially if you’ve had a long night in bad weather, you will be rewarded for your efforts in the long run. Look after your tent and it will look after you!
